Steady Gains Propel Salerno to a Game-Changing Victory
Cape May, New Jersey – June 12, 2024 – After starting the race without any public name recognition or official county party endorsements, Joe Salerno scored an impressive primary win over his more established Democratic rivals. “I’m proud of our team, I’m grateful to the voters of South Jersey, and I’m ready to carry the fight forward for them,” he told supporters.
According to Salerno’s campaign team, preliminary polls taken at the start of his candidacy showed limited initial awareness. But that soon changed as the campaign took shape. “The more people I met, the more we got our message out, the more we could feel our support and momentum growing,” he said. “I knew we were winning people over, it was just a question of whether we could connect with enough of them before primary day.”
The early voter counts supported that intuition. The later that votes came in, the more they favored Salerno. If that trend continues, this won’t be his last upset victory as he squares off against the Republican incumbent. Historically, the 2nd is a purple district that goes back and forth across party lines and where, in the last Presidential race, Biden narrowly lost by just five points. “Incumbents always have a starting advantage,” noted Salerno. “But our advantage is that the incumbent is Jeff Van Drew.”
