NJ-02 Now in Play for the Democrats
Newark, NJ – Sep 5, 2024 – Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) has put his enthusiastic support behind Joe Salerno in his race to win New Jersey’s 2nd Congressional District for the Democrats. In addition to providing his official endorsement, Booker led a joint rally for the Salerno campaign in Atlantic City on August 13th. His support provides yet another signal that what once appeared like another repeat for incumbent Republican Jeff Van Drew is now looking like a potential flip in South Jersey
In a note to supporters, Booker said “we need leaders like Joe in the House who will tirelessly fight for hardworking families across the country, defend reproductive rights and uphold democracy in the face of unprecedented attacks. I know Joe, and I know that he will roll up his sleeves and get to work every single day so he can defeat Jeff Van Drew and get back to delivering progress for South Jersey.” Booker’s endorsement comes on the heels of several others from prominent people and organizations that have brought increasing attention and supporters to the Salerno campaign.
The surge of support for Salerno seems to have taken the Van Drew camp by surprise. They have tried to push back a scheduled debate to a later date closer to the election. Many observers see that delaying tactic as an attempt to slow Salerrno’s growing momentum. “In the words of the great Joe Louis, ‘he can run, but he can’t hide,’“ said Salerno. “He can’t hide from a debate, from his extremist record, or from the people of South Jersey.”
